Cementation Africa: A new name for a new era in underground mining
Marking its 21st anniversary, Murray & Roberts Cementation has rebranded as Cementation Africa - a bold step signalling a new era of independence and growth following its acquisition by a consortium led by asset manager Differential Capital.
This new identity reflects a fresh strategic focus while retaining the company’s trusted leadership, skilled personnel and uncompromising commitment to safety, quality and performance. Originally formed in 2004 through the merger of Murray & Roberts RUC and The Cementation Company (Africa), Cementation Africa has evolved into one of the continent’s leading underground mining contractors with more than five decades of experience.
Over the last two decades, it has delivered more than 15 000 m of vertical shaft sinking and 72 000 m of raiseboring, driven by continuous innovation and cutting edge technologies like the Rotary Vertical drilling system. One of its most notable achievements is the 950-m deep ventilation shaft at Ivanplats’ Platreef project - completed with industry-leading precision.
Cementation Africa’s in-house mine engineering team provides a critical foundation for success, overseeing everything from mine design to execution planning. Integrated with site operations and supported by advanced digital modelling, the team ensures faster decisions, reduced risk and smarter outcomes.
Renowned for its execution of complex greenfield projects, the company supports clients from initial development through to operational readiness. Its fully accredited Cementation Africa Training Academy, in Carletonville, remains central to developing skilled artisans, supervisors and managers, while embracing simulation, virtual reality and underground mock-up facilities to prepare teams for real-world conditions.
In collaboration with original equipment manufacturers, Cementation Africa continues to pioneer safer, more productive methods, such as mechanised caisson shaft sinking and blind boring with mobile rigs.
With established operations in Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and Ghana, Cementation Africa is set to lead the next chapter in Africa’s underground mining evolution.
